Anaheim 1 Supercross Race Report | TeamRMATVMC

Payson, UT (Jan.09,2022) –   Supercross made it’s return to Southern California as round one of the 2022 Monster Energy Supercross series kicked off this past Saturday night at Angels Stadium in Anaheim, CA. It was the first race under the team tent for Shane McElrath and Max Anstie, while Joey Savatgy returns to the team for his sophomore year. At the end of the night, it was Savatgy earning a top ten finish to start the season.

Joey Savatgy returns to the team and showed that confidence in 450 heat two, as he started the race just inside the top ten in 9th. He then made quick work to move into 7th place as he picked up the tow of the front 6 riders. Joey looked smooth on his KTM as he made his move on Adam Cianciarulo, crossing the finish in 6th position and earning a spot in the main event.  A less-than-ideal start in the main had Joey just outside the top ten after the first lap taking the green flag in 12th spot.  A mid-race charge into the top ten started his push forward in the late stages of the race where he battled to 8th place at the checkered flag.

I am happy with my ride tonight. While I had some struggles with the track all day, I put it together for the main event and kept chipping away as I moved forward. Had some good battles at the end and am happy to get out of A1 safe and with a top ten.” – Joey Savatgy

Max Anstie was in good spirits, improving throughout the day and carrying that momentum into the first 450 heat race, where he rounded the first lap just outside the top five. He kept the pace early, making the move from 7th to 6th place where he would take the checkered flag and advancing to the main event.

The short start proved tricky for Max, as he would get pushed wide and buried deep in the pack. From there, the Research Engineering Performance supported rider moved his way forward on the chewed up track, working his way to 14th by the finish of the race.

For the first race, I’ll take it. I was having fun out there being in the mix. We’re taking it step by step, and ready to start progressing. Looking forward to Oakland and ready for a top ten finish. – Max Anstie

The night started off at the front for Shane McElrath as he grabbed a handful of power from his Twisted Development Racing engine and pulled the holeshot in the first 450 heat race leading the field at the end of the first lap. He continued to set the pace in the early half of the race, building a gap between the rest of the field. At the half-way mark, Shane received a threat for the lead from Chase Sexton, going back and forth before slotting back into second place. He continued to ride strong, as he held off a charging Eli Tomac to cross the finish line in second place and advancing to the main event. Another solid start in the main event put Shane inside the tip five at the end of the first lap. He started pushing forward and putting pressure on fourth place when he would jump long at the end of a rhythm section and land on the face of a jump hitting his head on the bar. Unfortunately, this would affect his race as he dropped off the pace and finishing the race at the tail end of the pack.

With the transporter loaded up, the team travels to Northern California and the Oakland Co. Coliseum for round two of the 2022 Monster Energy Supercross Series.
